all my followers are reblogging that post on how “if youre a trans man on t for longer than 5 years you will get uterine cancer” and

1)  the link is a huffington post article,

2)  im not a trans man but ive been looking and cant find any sources on long-term testosterone use having an increase in cancer rates,

and 3)  im not saying this is fearmongering trans ppl but it sure is cispicious

trans men on t: just get your junk checked up by a doctor once a year, you don’t ever need a hysterectomy unless your doctor finds something concerning. if your doctor or anyone else says you MUST get a hysto after a set amount of time, DONT BUY IT

that doesn’t even make sense, considering uterine cancer is associated with more exposure to estrogen. also this article doesn’t have anything regarding trans men, but it does say that exposure to testosterone shows no correlation with proliferation of the cells lining your uterus

long story short theres not enough information on long-term effects of hrt to definitively say “this is going to give you cancer” especially when theres a five year timer on it.

the other post had about 4k notes last i saw – which is hundreds of trans people who now believe transitioning is going to potentially kill them in a few years. please be more critical of what “trans information” posts you post and reblog, because this is straight up cruel

um guys?

canada is currently considering banning imidacloprid, which is apparently “one of the most widely used bee-killing pesticides in the world”. this seems pretty huge, so if you’ve got two seconds, add your name to the list! as of posting this link, they need just over 8,000 more signatures by february 21!

@allthecanadianpolitics

I DON’T CARE IF YOU’RE AMERICAN
PLEASE REBLOG THIS SO THAT OTHER CANADIAN USERS CAN SEE IT

COMPLETELY OFF TOPIC BUT THIS IS IMPORTANT TO ME

Text RACE to 73822 to tell Jack Daniels to stop supporting this abusive race

i think light n brief sledding is ok but many work these poor beautiful dogs to death!..I couldn’t let them sleep outside in the cold either, they would be in the tent with me..lol..I wish they could get rescued..I would love to save one!

Counterpoint – The idea that sled dogs are “forced” to run is fallacy.

I have been working with and running sled dogs in various aspects of the sport for a number of years and got into it because I love the dogs and the sheer delight they have for running in harness. I am always disappointed when it is misrepresented, which does happen from time to time. The Iditarod specifically has been targeted in this instance, although it’s only one of numerous races – albeit the one that is most commercialized and therefore in the public eye more.

Some days I’m content to let the misconceptions be and ignore them, secure in the knowledge that I am striving to take the best care possible for my dogs and give them a well-rounded, happy life with lots of attention, playtime, and mental and physical enrichment. Other days the misconceptions get to me and, being a musher who loves her dogs dearly and knows the amount of work and dedication that goes into a sled dog team, I just get overly frustrated and have to say something.

Today is one of the latter days.

Training sled dogs to run a marathon race is a matter of both dogs and conditioning. The dogs are huskies with both the genetic desire and the physical capability to run for long distances – and to do so happily. They have a thick double-coat like a wolf and, like their wild cousins, thrive in subzero Winters.

Conditioning starts with small training runs and gradually builds up miles so that the dogs don’t have difficulty running these longer distances. Last Winter the team was running 40-milers but this Fall we didn’t start with that. We didn’t even start with a 20-miler. Could they do it? Sure, but it would take a toll physically on them since they wouldn’t be conditioned to routinely run that distance. That would be working them too hard. So we started small, doing 3-mile runs with frequent breaks. After that we built up to 5-milers, then 7-milers, then 9. We did two back-to-back 9-milers this weekend and are now taking a few days break before our first 12-miler of the season.

As the dogs become more conditioned and in shape, doing 100-150-mile races in January and February will be no hardship for them. I’m not training for anything like the Iditarod this year (my race team, at eight dogs, is half the size of an Iditarod team) but those mushers who are have their own training and conditioning program to make sure their dogs are fit enough to run a mushing marathon like that.

MinuteEarth recently made a video explaining the scientific process of how dogs are able to run long-distance races like the Iditarod, and why this makes them more efficiently athletic than humans.

In addition to a complete physical exam, any dog that is entered in the Iditarod must be microchipped, undergo an EKG as well as have blood drawn for a CBC, full chemistry and electrolyte panel before being allowed to race. This is more screening than the average “pet” dog undergoes before a surgical proceedure. The race’s veterinary crew is stationed at checkpoints along the trail during the race itself – and this hold true for any modern sled dog race, not just the Iditarod. Mushers are required to have a vet book with exam information on each dog in the team with them at all times in every mid-distance race I have been to and, at many races (including the Iditarod), this book must be signed before the team can leave a checkpoint.

Ironically, in the PETA video from the original post, there is actually footage of either mushers or veterinarians checking the health of the dogs. It’s not something someone unfamiliar with sled dogs would pick up on because you wouldn’t even know to look for it, but it definitely made me do a double-take since it’s so contradictory to the message the video clip is trying to push.

And I’m not just talking about the clip where we see a musher putting a protective coat on their dog.

image

The two things that really stand out to me are actually after the dog-jacket clip. First we see someone extending a forelimb of a dog.

image

This is something we do a lot, both on sled dogs and on any patient where we want to check flexion and range of motion. With sled dogs, it’s very important to make sure they have good range of motion and that their legs aren’t painful when extended or flexed – especially after a rest.

In the very next clip, there’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment where the musher or veterinarian lifts up a dog’s lip and checks the gum. This is a common method of checking hydration by making sure the gums do not appear tacky, and you can check CRT (Capilary Refill Time) by pressing on the gums and seeing how quickly the pink color returns. Checking the color of the gums is also important as abnormal coloration could be indicitive of a problem.

image

Veterinary care in all walks of life has improved over the past decades, and sled dog racing is no exception. Understanding of conditioning and the physiology of working dogs has lead to massive improvements in the Iditarod, whereas in the early 1970s when the race began, knowledge of distance racing was scant and resulted in a high number of dog fatalities – especially in the first two years of the race.

There’s a general rule of thumb in sled dog racing that you rest your team for approximately the same length of time you run them, so they are able to recuperate and continue. Every musher’s philosophy and schedule is a bit different of course and each race is different. The Iditarod requires designated amounts of rest time at certain checkpoints but most of it is left up to the musher and team since some might choose to rest at a checkpoint but others prefer to camp along the trail as it’s quieter for the dogs. This is why the amount of “required” rest (ie. rest at checkpoints) seems low.

In addition, I feel the need to include some comments from the musher whose dogs did not eat their food at a checkpoint. In an open letter to the filmmaker whose footage is used in the PETA clip, he stated:

“My dogs didn’t eat literally the one time when they were filmed in Rainy pass. Because it was warm. And they literally ate 15000 calories 5 hours previous and snacks 2 hours previous. Do you show that? No. Matt filmed me feeding once the whole Iditarod! Now I know why. Dogs don’t eat sometimes. Even house pets.”

It’s also worth noting that the Rainy Pass checkpoint is less than two hundred miles into the Iditarod, teams usually reach it on the second day of the race. No team has been racing for nine days when they reach that checkpoint.

Once again, i feel the need to reiterate: PETA IS NOT A RELIABLE SOURCE OF INFORMATION.

A Very Important PSA To The Youtube Community!!

plap-slap:

I’m going to make this as quick as possible before you scroll by this with boredom, I swear to you it’s very important.

Please end craptions.

I was just watching the “Who Killed Markiplier,” series and being very hard of hearing, use closed captions for everything I watch. In this case, the captions ruined some of it for me.

Very few Youtubers caption their own videos, even less have good volunteers for it. Please don’t scroll by just yet, and remember that you’re not the only one who enjoys watching videos.

Many captions are awful, spoiling, or downright ableist with several slurs. Here is an example that actually makes me sick to my stomach.

If you have to time to help out the Deaf/Hard of Hearing community by captioning videos, here are some examples of what not to do.

  • Please do not add your own commentary.
  • Please don’t put your own sentences in parenthesis.
  • Please no “That’s what she said,” Lenny Faces, or XD’s in your captions.
  • Please don’t add actions if they’re visible on camera.
  • Please don’t add things such as “*Sassy face.* “(Bye Felicia!)” etc.
  • Don’t add things such as  [ ___ is tired of ___ shit.]
  • For things like Antisepticeye, or Darkiplier, don’t type  ļị̱̙k͇̺͚͜e̫ ͙̩th̞i҉̭̯̙s͕̠̪͍̤͞, it’s too hard to read and captions go by fast.

Things you can do!

  1. Add everything said! No line is too unimportant to be skipped or shortened!
  2. If everyone is talking at once, add [Name], hyphens to show an interruption, etc.
  3. Add [Offscreen] and the noise heard/things said.

Just remember this, if it’s not in the video, don’t put it in the captions!!

Thank you, and love from this HoH kid.

Can we please stop the White Feminist™ idea that naked = empowered?

Because I had to watch the Muslim girl in my history class lucture the class on Islam’s treatment of women and why she wears her hijab to feel closer to god, because some new girl in our class tried to coerce her into taking it off, and then proceeded to try to take it off her.

I made sure she was alright after class and she told me she’s used to it. I. Got. Pissed. Because this sweet girl is used to other people trying to rip her hijab off. I’m not Muslim, but from what I understand, that’s like being used to people trying to rip your shirt off of you.

Also, this idea doesn’t just threaten and offend Muslim women and girls. Because a lot of women and afab people don’t like being naked. It’s not empowering to them, it’s demeaning. For example, I don’t like being naked, because I just don’t feel comfortable with it. But still, my family still forces me to wear bikinis to the beach and thinks I’m self conscious just because I don’t want to wear the least amount of clothes possible.

So, in summary:

Destroy the White Feminist™ idea that Naked = Empowered

Destroy the White Feminist™ idea that Naked = Empowered

Destroy the White Feminist™ idea that Naked = Empowered

Destroy the White Feminist™ idea that Naked = Empowered

  • Destroy the White Feminist™ idea that Naked = Empowered
  1. Destroy the White Feminist™ idea that Naked = Empowered

Female empowerment is the ability to chose to behave or dress as you wish.  Hard stop. If you, personally, feel empowered by walking around in public topless, more power to you.  However, if someone else is choosing to be covered from head to toe because that makes them feel empowered, then back the fuck off.

The power is in the choice, not in the result.

I know I’m the OP but I wanted to reblog for this excellent addition.

It’s almost as if schools push and ideology that benefits schools.

Particularly if you get certified to haul Hazmat materials.

I’ve talked to many of the drivers who haul Hazmat loads into/out of our facility and some of them make absolute bank.

In part, it’s because when our parents were growing up, a college degree guaranteed the ability to make, like, eight times as much money as trade jobs did. Not that the trade jobs were bad or paid poorly, it was just that college was supposed to be the road to oodles more money.

That “truth” has long since disintegrated, because soon so many jobs now view college degrees as a basic requirement for an employee instead of a gold-standard hire…but that just made the pressure to get a college degree even worse, because if everyone had one and you didn’t, what kind of job could you hope for?

A lot of awesome ones if you train for a trade, as it turns out, but the myth of higher education being the road to success remains, even though more often than not these days it seems to lead to massive debt and little hope of landing the kind of position your education ought to warrant.

If you’re an artist, then this is for you.

This year, I want you to be unapologetic when you create.

Don’t apologize for your writing, drawing, music, designs, films, sculptures, cosplays, knitting, sewing, cooking, and anything else I might’ve missed.

Don’t apologize for the quality.

Stop being afraid of what you can accomplish. You might think you can do so much better, well guess what? You will. You’re always improving. But if you start to apologize for the best you can do at this moment, then you might restrain yourself, stop yourself from taking risks that will help you.

I know this is a hard thing to stop. I do it all the time. When I submit art to people that I’m not so confident about, I’ll apologize in advance.

This year, I challenge you, and myself, to stop doing it.

All these positive posts on like “start your 2018 off right!” are nice and all but,, it’s also okay if ur 2018 doesn’t start off great. It’s okay if you’re sick in bed and grieving and haven’t showered in a week. You’ve got a whole year ahead of you to improve yourself and your life like,, it’s not a race. You’re allowed to take your time with healing and moving forward. I haven’t slept well in days so this might be unintelligible but hdbbwnaj I thought someone should make this post even if no one will see it. Good luck with ya new year people

I feel terrible whenever I hear my parents talking to each other about our household’s income. We only own a South Asian store, where we sell like spices, henna, frozen Desi foods, hair products, skin products, daal, etc (typical Desi store stuff). That’s our only source of income. It used to be okay-ish back in elementary and middle school, but ever since these American stores started to sell some of these things (at prices higher than their worth), less people have been shopping at our store, hence our income declining.

Please, I’m begging y’all, support your local South Asian stores, and shop there if you need any of those “South Asian” items (if there is a South Asian store near you). At least 60% of the owners are likely going through the same as my parents. Also, I can almost guarantee you’ll save money shopping at the local Desi stores as opposed to stores like Safeway, Vons, Krogers, etc.

for those that may be unfamiliar, here are some neat products you can usually find super cheap at SA stores:

– coconut oil in massive bottles. get that stuff in bulk, it’s exactly the same as the overpriced shit from whole foods or w/e

– cool unique drinks like mango and lychee juice and coconut water with jelly. also limca and thums up, which are soooooo good. trust me.

– super cheap pretty jewelry. maybe not real gold and silver, but you’ll find the same types of bangles and chains that UO constantly rips off for muuuuch cheaper

– sometimes super cheap designer knockoff bags, if that’s your thing lol

– henna! I know there’s a lot of debate over whether this product can be used by non-brown people, but if for whatever reason you’re going to use it (please avoid traditional designs if ur not from a culture that uses it), do yourself a favor and buy yourself tubes of the paste from south asian markets. they’re usually really precise and easy to use, and unless you have an allergy to the plant, better for your skin than those sketchy artificial stick-on stencil messes they sell at hobby lobby or w/e

– henna hair dye too! and other nice hair products like neem oil

– maybe this is just our old local store, but ive seen many pirated (and non-pirated) copies of Bollywood movies on their shelves

– incense!! they usually have nice varieties and also cute holders and candles too

– obviously, there is also lots of great food and produce typically available. Asian desserts and snacks are really unique and fun to try, so check those out too

support local businesses owned by POC and immigrants!!

I can’t believe how many notes this has gotten, thank you to everyone who has spread this around <33
